DescriptionDescription: Laid down. Inscribed at lower left in pen and brown ink: "Richter fecit in Venetia". Provenance: Kongl. Museum (Lugt 1638) Johan Richter came from a well-known Swedish family of artists; the miniaturists David Richter the younger and Christian Richter were his brothers. Very little is known about Johan´s life. Having studied under Johan Sylvius he left Sweden, probably in 1597, and appears to have settled for good in Venice about a decade later, specializing in vedutas. With the combination of decorative urn on the left, a picturesque genre group in the centre and the veduta with San Giorgio Maggiore in the right background, this sheet can no doubt be classed as a capriccio. The motif recurs, somewhat altered, in a painting that was sold in Finarte, Milan, around 1970. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 217]
