DescriptionDescription: No watermark. Inscribed at lower right in pen and brown ink: "Zalimberti" (Gamba´s hand?). Inscribed verso in pen and blue ink: "Drawing by Filippo Zanimberti born at Brescia 1585- died 1636." Provenance: Bartolomeo Gamba? ; Carl Mörner ; Gift to the museum in 1928. There seems to be no basis for the attribution to Zanimberti - the drawing is more probably from the early 18th century. The sheet is somewhat confusing in that the orignal composition appears to have been added to in a darker shade of brown ink, probably by another hand. It is also doubtful whether the heightening in white (now dark grey) is part of the original composition. The original drawing, in light brown, is definitely superior in quality, notwithstanding its rapid, sketch-like character. It bears close similarities to quick studies by Marco Ricci and can no doubt be attributed to him or his immediate circle. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 211]
