DescriptionDescription: Watermark. Star over anchor? (fragment). Provenance: Acquired at Sotheby´s, Florence, 18 October 1969, lot D 33. This is one of a group of exceptionally small sheets, the others being mainly in the Rjksmuseum, Amsterdam, and in the Hamburger Kunsthalle. Piranesi combines fragments of architecture, ruins and vegetation in a relatively conventional 18th century manner. Commenting on a similar work in Amsterdam, Hylton Thomas notes that Piranesi seems to have influenced by Marco Ricci, the Venetian popularizer of the genre. Despite the clear reminiscensces of Venice, the sheet no doubt dates from after Piranesi´s move to Rome, i.e. the latter half of the 1740s. There is a space in the upper right of the picture, perhaps for a text or an addition to the drawing on another piece of paper. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 206]
