DescriptionDescription: Toussaint Gelton was a Dutch artist who worked in Sweden for a few years in the 1660s. His paintings were often small, like this one, with fine brush strokes on copperplates. This work gives the illusion of looking through an arched window in a wall. The room is illuminated by a single candle. The man has removed it from the holder to see better. He lifts his gaze from the pulpit and gazes out at us in the dark. The illusion is enhanced by the play of shadows in the opening.
