DescriptionDescription: Ariadne, daughter of King Minos of Crete and abandoned on the island of Naxos, has saved her love Theseus from the Minotaur. This work, the Swedish painter Adolf Ulrik Wertmüller’s 1783 breakthrough in Paris, reflects late 18th-century sentimental classicism. The tear-filled eyes also evoke the legacy of the Italian 17th-century painter Guido Reni. The painting was commissioned by ambassador Gustaf Philip Creutz and presented to Gustav III.
