DescriptionDescription: Alexander Lauréus came to Rome via Paris in 1820. After three years in the city, he became ill and died, merely 40 years old. Lauréus skilfully captured trends in art and painted what was demanded by the art buyers in his native Sweden. This painting shows thieves robbing a shepherd and his family. The painting is a cleverly performed synthesis of the Scandinavian image of Italy as both frightening and idyllic.
