DescriptionDescription: Squared in red chalk. Laid down Numbered in pen and brown ink at lower right: 1151 (Sparre) The drawing is preparatory to the painting in SS. Nereo e Achilleo in Rome, commissioned by cardinal Baronio and executed 1596-97. Another drawing, more finished and also squared, is in the Courtauld Institute, London. The present drawing corresponds closely to the painting, whereas the Courtauld drawing differs in some respects: the angels in the sky are different, and S. Achilleo on the right has crossed legs and the head turned aways from the centre (two positions of the head are indicated in the Stockholm drawing) [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 561]
