DescriptionCatalogue raisonné: Description in Flemish paintings C. 1600-C. 1800 III, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, 2010, cat.no. 8: Technical notes: The support consists of a single piece of fabric, probably linen woven in a plain-weave technique. The painting was lined in 1942. Tacking edges present along all sides. The motif continues around the edges. The fabric has been prepared with a ground and the paint layer is opaque. The brush strokes are coarse and not very well modulated. The figures are stiff and schematically rendered. There are very few details of leaves and figures. The painting style can be compared with that of no. 7 and no. 9. The painting underwent conservation treatment in 1923, 1942 and 1988. Provenance: Martelli 1804, no. 188, (as Gaspard Dughet); KM 1816, no. 239; (missing 29 November 1990). Bibliography: Sander III, p. 109, no. 188 (as Gaspard Poussin); Göthe 1887, p. 76, (as Gaspard Dughet); Göthe 1893, p. 93 (as Gaspard Dughet); NM Cat. 1958, p. 234 (as anonymous Italian master); NM Cat. 1990, p. 32, (as manner of Jan Frans van Bloemen). A companion piece to the following work (no. 9). For its history and provenance see no. 6. A cistern with the figure of a sphinx is depicted in a landscape with pines and around it five figures, one of them a woman in a blue costume sitting on a stone wall. In Martelli’s inventory this and the three following works are attributed to Nicolas Poussin and Gaspard Dughet (also called Gaspard Poussin) but they have gradually been downgraded. They belong rather to Van Bloemen’s oeuvre but whether or not they are by his hand alone cannot be determined. GCB [End] A cistern with the figure of a sphinx is depicted in a landscape with pines and around it five figures, one of them a woman in a blue costume sitting on a stone wall.
