DescriptionDescription: Laid down Inscribed in pen and brown ink 8 cm. up from bottom left: Manichei Contra August, and in left corner: Amico Aspertini, in pen and black ink in right corner: Cabinet de Crozat. With pen and brown ink in right corner initial: P. Numbered in pen and black ink in right corner: 668 (Sparre) Vasari lists a fresco in the library of S. Salvatore a fratti Sopetini, for which our drawing might be a preparatory study, as a collaborative work by Pupini and Bagnacavallo: "Lavorano ancora in una facciata della libreria una Disputa di S.A., nelle quale fecero una prospettiva assai ragionevole." According to Malvasia, the now destroyed S. Salvatore fresco recalled Raphael's "The school of Athens". This preparatory study by Puppini presumably gives a rather good idea of the composition of the lost fresco [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 1278]
