DescriptionDescription: The focus of this painting is on the boy’s gaze and his body, marked by scoliosis. Idealised images of poor children frequently occurred in genre painting. Richard Bergh, however, chose to portray his subject in his own environment, the fishing port of Concarneau in Brittany, a popular destination for Scandinavian artists. Child labour was common in 19th-century Europe, especially in the towns, where the working classes were exploited in industry.
