DescriptionDescription: Boucher’s inspiration for this idyll was probably Charles Simon Favart’s 1745 pantomime Les vendanges de Tempé. The protagonist, a shepherd, is courting his sweetheart Lisette. The shepherd was originally played by Favart’s wife, and the work made a deliberate play on gender roles – this is maintained in the way Boucher depicts the two characters. The painting was commissioned for Lovisa Ulrika’s picture gallery at Drottningholm Palace.
