DescriptionCatalogue raisonné: Description in Flemish paintings C. 1600-C. 1800 III, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, 2010, cat.no. 171: Technical notes: The support consists of a piece of coarse fabric woven evenly and densely in a plain weave technique. The tacking edges have been trimmed to fit the edges of the current stretcher. The painting has been lined and mounted on a non-original stretcher. The canvas was prepared with a thick and even application of ground that completely covers the support. A light beigish imprimatura was applied over the ground. The paint layer is opaque and has been applied with impasto elements in the highlights, waves and sky. The figures are rendered in fine detail. The faces are well modelled. The garments are rendered well with a wealth of fine details. The architecture is detailed and executed using paint applied thinly with supple brushstrokes and to some extent in reserves that had been left in the background. In the foliage to the left there are highlights in zigzag patterns. The sails have been painted over the vessels and sky in the background. The landscape has been painted using a sfumato technique. The figures have been painted over the foreground. Fine underdrawing can be seen along the left side of the tower and under the window (on the right), visible in infra-red light. Brownish underpainting is present below the architecture and foreground. The painting is in good condition. It underwent conservation treatment in 1868, 1869, 1870, 1872 and 1935. Provenance: Gustav III (as Crown Prince) 1761, no. 59; Gustav III 1792, no. 13 (as Roland Savery); KM 1795, no. 186; KM 1816, no. 196. Bibliography: Sander II, p. 102, no. 13 (as Roland Savery); Göthe 1887, p. 241; Göthe 1893, p. 296; Von Wurzbach II 1910, p. 580; Granberg 1931, p. 17; NM Cat. 1958, p. 182; NM Cat. 1990, p. 329. This painting, which is a companion piece to no. 170, comes from the same hand as the preceding entry. In the foreground and middle ground a wealth of figures are rendered, some sitting, standing, running, walking or in conversation. A number of boats, their sails hoist, are moored to the shore. In the market place fish is being sold after being carried from the boats by the shore in large, woven baskets. At the centre of the picture a large tree is depicted in full leaf and behind it a number of secular buildings. On a hill to the right we can see a building resembling a tower next to trees in leaf and on the right open water with traces of the silhouettes of mountains. The sky is bright with light clouds. This work was already part of Crown Prince Gustav’s collection in 1761. It was later transferred to the Royal Museum, the predecessor of the Nationalmuseum. KS [End]
