DescriptionDescription: Upper left corner torn off and replaced. Laid down Numbered at lower right in pen and brown ink: 1009 (Sparre) and 54 (struck out) Lodovico Carracci produced, in collaboration with some of his pupils, a series of drawings depicting the Passion of Christ. This set would seem to have belonged to Jabach, and several of the drawings are now in the Louvre. Two additional sheets from the set are in Stockholm. According to Tessin, the present drawing is a copy after Ludovico Carracci. Bohn compares the style of our drawing with that of Ludovico, and, though she emphasizes their similarities, she nevertheless feels that the more mechanical and generalizing manner here suggests the hand of Valesio. She further compares our drawing with a small painting by Ludovico of the same subject, finding the latter compositionally stronger. In the Crozat catalogue, Mariette described lot 584 as follows: "Trente Desseins, du nombre desquels sont trois Compositions d'apres Louis Carracche, dessinées à la plume avec grand soin."
