DescriptionDescription: Watermark: Bird. Numbered at lower right in pen and brown ink: 13 (struck out). Inscribed on the old mount in pen and brown ink: Guerchin, Cabinet de Crozat (Tessin's hand) and numbered: 942 (Sparre) On many separate occasions Guercino produced paintings of Sibyls, the first in the late 1620s as a series of frescoes in the Cathedral of Piacenza. This drawing cannot be associated with a particular painting, though there are certain correspondences in attitude and temperament with the Sibylla Cimmeria of 1638 now in the Credito Emiliano, Reggio Emilia. There is a drawing of a Sibyl in a similar pose in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 1560]
