DescriptionDescription: Brown stains. Laid down. Inscribed: no. 22. Lud[-]co Caracci in pen and brown ink at bottom right. Numbered in pen and black ink in right corner on mount: 8 and 764 (Sparre) The technique of this drawing, with its forcefully repeated hatching, was developed by Passarotti, who first adopted it as a printmaker, also using it for drawings produced as finished works of art. The method was later practised by the Carracci and their pupils. This portrait of Titus was inspired by Ancient marble busts and by Titian's portrait from a set of twelve Roman Emperors for the duke of Mantua (now lost). Cf similar portraits by Agostino Carracci (no. 1373) and Valesio (no. 1672) [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 1453]
