DescriptionDescription: Brown stains. Incised through but not blackened on verso. Inscribed: "Jean Battᵉ Coriolano Ecolier du Valese" in pen and brown ink on lower left side. Numbered: 84 (struck out) in pen and black ink in lower right corner. Numbered: 1019 in pen and black ink in right corner (Sparre). Coriolano executed a rather similar composition representing the city of Bologna as a female warrior accompanied by a female allegorical figure symbolizing the Roman Church. Our drawing might be a study for a companion piece depicting the city in similar fashion, this time accompanied by one of the Muses holding a laurel branch, and with Apollo and the other Muses in the right distance.
