DescriptionCatalogue raisonné: Description in Flemish paintings C. 1600-C. 1800 III, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, 2010, cat.no. 12:   Technical notes: The support consist of a single board of oak (0.3–0.5 cm) sawn radially with a horizontal grain. All sides are bevelled. Dendrochronological examination and analysis has determined a felling date for the tree between c. 1657 and 1673. The wood originated from the region of Western Germany/the Netherlands. Under the assumption of a median of 17 sapwood rings and a minimum of 2 years for seasoning of the wood, the most plausible date for use of the panel would be 1669 or later The ground of white chalk is thickly and evenly rendered and covers the structure of the support unlike no. 11 and was followed by a thin semi-transparent imprimatura. The paint layer is opaque with particles of carbon. The man in the background is painted over the background. The palette consists of earth pigments. The painting underwent conservation treatment in 1929. Bibliography: Sander I, p. 91, no. 167; Göthe 1887, p. 19; Göthe 1893, p. 24; NM Cat. 1958, p. 17; NM Cat. 1990, p. 32. This painting is a companion piece to no. 11. For commentary see the preceding entry. GCB
