DescriptionCatalogue raisonné: Description in Flemish paintings C. 1600-C. 1800 III, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, 2010, cat.no. 18: Technical notes: The support consists of a single piece of plain weave fabric. The painting has been lined. All four sides have been trimmed to fit the current strainer. The canvas has been prepared with a reddish ground that completely covers the texture of the support. The paint layer is applied thickly and opaquely. Details of the animals have been executed in impasto. The highlights have been rendered in impasto using a brush with abundant white pigment against a dry underlying surface to produce a textural effect. The mountains in the background have been rendered in sfumato. Finely detailed rendering of figures and animals with well integrated and finely modulated mixtures of pigments. The technique partly resembles nos. 13, 14 and 15. The painting underwent conservation treatment in 1984. Executed by Pieter van Bloemen or a collaborator. GCB [End]
