DescriptionDescription: At the start of her career, Tollie Zellman performed in plays by August Strindberg, among others, but when this portrait was painted in 1911 she was already in the line of work she would be most famous for – that of a comic actress – and employed by the Folkteatern in Stockholm. The year before, Nerman had returned from Paris, having trained at the Académie Colarossi and under Henri Matisse. That influence is reflected, for example, in the contrasting colours of background and clothing in his portrait of Zellman.
