DescriptionDescription: Laid down. Inscribed in pen and brown ink at lower left: "Francesco Salviati". Further towards the right: "Daniele da Volterra" and "Cabinet de Crozat" (in Tessin´s hand). Numbered in pen and brown ink at lower right: 11 (struck out) and 87. Sirén noted that this is a copy after Michelangelo´s famous drawing in the Uffizi (inv.598E recto) and attributed it to Salviati or a close follower. Although Catherine Monbeig Goguel has also suggested the other traditional attribution, Daniele da Volterra (1984 mat note) and Bacchiacca (undated note), in the absence of new information the drawing cannot be absolutely attributed to any of these artist. The high quality of this sheet is evident in comparsion to some of the other known copies after Michelalngelo´s original. For example, ours compares favorably with a copy of very good quality at Windsor Castle (Royal Library 0419), which has been attributed to Giulio Clovio and Alessandro Allori. However, a copy at Rennes (inv. 794.1.2927) is clearly the work of Bacchiacca: the idiosyncratic and affected lines of the woman´s attenuated neck, flattened lips, and missplaced iris (too far over in her eye), are hallmarks of his style. Although Bacchiacca employed specific details from his copy after Michelangelo in at least three paintings, he can be ruled out as the author of the present sheet. one of the two traditional attributions is most likely correct.
