DescriptionDescription: Study for the angel who rescued St. Peter. Laid down. numbered in pen and brown ink at lower right: 628 (Sparre) Recognized as Salviati by Konrad Oberhuber and Catherine Monbeig Goguel (undated mat notes), the drawing dates ca. 1540-1550. It is similar to a number of figures in paintings and drawings by Salviati. The figure type is close to that of a soldier in Salviati's Palazzo Farnese frescoes and in Coronation of the Virgin in the church of San Lorenzo in Damaso, Rome. It is loosely associated to drawings of soldier in the British Museum (1946-7-13-53), Ambrosiana (Cod. F.262 Inf.n.39), and Louvre (inv. 778). The closest analogy is, however, a drawing of a soldier in St. Petersburg. The State Hermitage, inv. 4654, which is executed in the same technique, and is identical to the lower half of this figure in reverse. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 1167]
