DescriptionDescription: Laid down. Numbered in pen and brown ink at lower right: 111 (Sparre). Inscribed in pen and brown ink at upper right: André del Sarto (in the hand of C.G. Tessin). Sirén correctly noted that this is a fragment of an original cartoon by del Sarto for one of his most important paintings, "The Sacrifice for Isaac", procured by Giovanni Battista della Palla for Francis I about 1527 as a pendant to Carità (now in the Louvre). It was never delivered and is now in Dresden, inv.no.77. The measurements of the cartoon correspond exactly to the dimensions of the head in the Dresden panel. Incised for transfer, the drawing has the rich build-up of chalk and the shiney, rubbed surface to be expected in a cartoon [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 1174]
