DescriptionDescription: Study for the facade of San Lorenzo, or study for the upper section of the tomb of Clement VII. Watermark: Two crossed arrows and a star (Close to Briquet 6292, Florence 1509-1510). Numbered in pen and brown ink at lower right: 94 (Sparre) and 55. Acquired with 1105 above. While Tessin (1749) recognized that only one of these two architectural projects was for the tomb in "Santa Maria sopra Minerva", Sirén (1902) indicated both plans as related to the Roman tomb of the Medici popes. The Risen Christ, flanked by angels holding the eternal flame, rises above a classical pediment. In the central bay is the story of "The Feast of Herod" with the beheading of St. John the Baptist at the left. This would seem to link this sheet to the preceding, and lend support for Sirén's idea, strongly endorsed by Roger Ward (1979 note), that 1106 is for the upper part of the same monument. Indeed, the remaining scences are closely associated with the Medici. In the left bay is "Sts. Cosmas and Damian and the Miracle of the Leg", the right is "The Martyrdom of St. Lawrence". However, Detlef Heikamp has suggested that the present sheet is Bandinelli's plan for the façade of the Medici parish church of "San Lorenzo". His suggestion is supported by the pediment, including the sculptural ornamentation, found in earlier ideas for the façade, and the juxtaposition of the two ancillary subjects, which were projected for the decoration of "San Lorenzo".
