DescriptionDescription: A Vision of Christ and the Madonna. In the foreground a kneeling young man. No watermark. Numbered at lower right in pen and brown ink. 474 (Sparre) and [cancelled]: 4. Arslan has suggested a date around 1650, comparing our sheet with a drawing in Windsor Castle for a fresco in Palazzo Costaguti, Rome, of Bacchus and Ariadne, which has been dated by Harris to 1648; a date about 1650 is confirmed by the drawings style. The upper part of the composition implies knowledge of a drawing by Lodovico Carracci, the Vision of St Francis, as the pose of Christ and the Virgin is almost identical. The kneeling figure has laid down his armour in front of him, obviously intent on following a religious vocation. No related painting is known. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 774]
