DescriptionDescription: Numbered at lower right in pen and brown ink: 536. (Sparre) This scene was in all probability part of the original concept for decorating the Galleria dell´Eroe in Palazzo Carpegna, probably replaced by Caesar burning the Letters of Pompey, which has borrowed many details from the Stockholm composition. There are more studies for this composition, one quick sketch in Rome, another, more elaborated version in Florence, and c.10 detail studies in Rome. Our drawing can be dated to the early 1680s as the verso of the Farnesina sheet carries a preliminary study for S. Michele in S. Andrea delle Fratte. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 723]
