DescriptionDescription: Anne, the dowager queen of France, is shown here together with her two sons. When her husband, Louis XIII, died in 1643, she became regent of France and guardian to her eldest son, Louis XIV. The young king, who was about 8 years old when this portrait was painted, stands to the far left. His brother Philippe is two years younger and is still wearing a child’s frock. Anne sent the portrait as a gift to Queen Christina of Sweden in 1646.
