DescriptionDescription: Laid down. Inscibed at lower right in pen and brown ink. Zuccaro. Cabinet de Crozat (Tessin) and numbered: 384 (Sparre). Identified by Gere as a design for the decoration of an Urbino-ware cistern in the Bargello, Florence whih was presumably part of a maiolica service ordered by Guidobaldo II of Urbino for which Taddeo Zuccaro supplied designs between 1560 and 1562. Certain features of the composition suggests knowledge of Polidoro da Caravaggio´s frieze of a naval battle on the facade of the Palazzo Gaddi, engraved by Pietro Santi Bartoli. No original of this composition is known. Gere has, however, identified further copies in the British Museum, Uffizi, Louvre, Hamburg and Holkham Hali. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 613]
