DescriptionDescription: Watermark: Man in ring. Inscribed at upper right in pen and black ink: g B 10 zuccaro. At lower left: shizzo di mano di Tadeo (inscribed by Federigo) Zuccaro. Numbered at lower right in pen and brown ink: 386 (Sparre) Verso: Two monsters. Red and black chalk. In front of the young man, in the lower right part of the sheet, is a small study of the Farnese "Hercules" seen from behind. Gere´s comment: "Were it not for the old inscription, one might have been tempted by the directness of observation and the psychological realism of this somewhat grotesque but at the same time moving portrait to begin looking for its author in the circle of the Carracci towards the end of the century." As for the two monsters verso, Gere attributed them in 1969 to Federigo. Restudying them in 1976, he feels less confident in this attribution, adding: "It could perhaps be by Taddeo in an unfamiliar phase" [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 604]
