DescriptionDescription: [for NMH 442-444/1863]: Verso [NMH 444/1863]: Angels. Pen and brown ink. One of a number of sketches for the altarpiece in the Pucci Chapel, S. Trinità dei Monti, Rome. The commission was given to Taddeo in 1563 and completed by Federigo in 1589. Gere argues that Federigo altered the composition substantially, particularly the upper portion which is represented in our drawing. In his opinion our drawing is one of Federigo's contributions. The alterations might have been introduced by Federigo after he had seen Titian's altarpiece of the same subject in the church of the Frari in Venice. The drawing closest to our sheet is one in the Mackenzie Art Gallery, Regina, Saskatchewan but Mundy's opinion is that while the Mackenzie drawing has many attributes of Federigo's hand, the Stockholm sheet has so many aspects of Taddeo's style, especially his eclectic use of line, that it is difficult to asign this drawing to Federigo. One of the putti verso appears to the left of the Virgin in the final painting. There are a number of other drawings related to the Assumption in the Ashmolean at Oxford, the Uffizi in Florence and a lost drawing in the Instituto Jovellanos de Gijon. [Bjurström, It.
