DescriptionDescription: A Sphinx, Probably for S. Maria della Steccata, Parma. No watermark. Inscribed by the artist underneath in pen and brown ink: "la aviata", and, in a later hand, "Parmesan". Numbered at lower right: 190 (struck out) and 625. (Sparre). The sphinx is probably connected with the decoration of S. Maria della Steccata, Parma. Two confronted sphinxes, certainly designed for the space between the ovals in the "sottarchi" of the vaulting, were etched by Lucas Vorsterman from drawings now lost. Parmigianino worked on the Steccata 1531-39. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 257]
