DescriptionDescription: Beheading of St. John the Baptist. Watermark: A ring and letters A and M combined. Numbered at lower right in pen and brown ink: 1350. (Sparre). Verso: Studies of figures. Red chalk. Attributed to Pellegrini by Bettagno and dated by Pignatti to the latter half of the 1720s, i.e. after the artist's lengthy tour of England (1708-13), Germany and the Netherlands (1713 - 1716/18) and Paris (1719-20). During this cosmopolitan period he was impressed by van Dyck, Rembrandt and others. Although he continued to travel, Pellegrini adhered more closely to Venetian art in the final decades of his life, evolving a painterly style that broke with the retrospective tradition of the 17th century and presaged the great 18th century masters.
