DescriptionDescription: Laid down. Inscribed at lower centre in pen and brown ink: Cabinet de Crozat. Numbered at lower right: 1193. (Sparre). An old inscription on the mount, "del moro", was accepted by Tessin. In Wilde´s catalogue from 1790 the sheet is ascribed to Francesco Turbido and this was repeated in the 1863 inventory. In 1902 Sirén mentions the drawing without deciding about the attribution to Turbido, which was still current. At the Stockholm exhibition of 1962 the sheet appeared as by Battista del Moro and Mullaly accepted this in his catalogue from 1971. Ballarin has shown, however, that this drawing, and one in the Witt collection, London, are preliminary studies for engravings in the series Paesaggi con rovine della antichità di Roma which Pittoni published in 1561. Another example of the composition, with an old attribution to Pittoni, was auctioned at Sotheby´s on 27 January 1966 (no 157). [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 106]
