DescriptionDescription: The Raising of Lazarus. Watermark: Fleur-de-lis (close to heawood 1620: Rome 1647-74). Inscribed at lower left in pen and brown ink: Carlo Saraccino detto Carlo Veneziano. In the Verona catalogue from 1974 this sheet was considered at lenght by Anna Ottani Cavina, who invests it with central importance for reconstructing the artist's activity as a draughtsman. She finds a correspondence with Saraceni's style in the dog, the youth on the right and the old persons. The woman closest to Lazarus she compares in particular with a similar figure in St. Benno's miracle, from 1618. She also points to parallels in the drawing of St. Raimondo preaching, the style of which is very close to our sheet but which has unfortunately been destroyed. An entirely different opinion is that of Walter Vitzthum, who regarded the sheet s by Giovanni Battista Spinelli from Naples, referring to a group of signed sheets by him in the Uffizi. Spinelli was a pupil of Massimo Stanzione and it is only in recent years that his artistic profile har re-emerged. In view of the old attribution to Saraceni and affinities with his oeuvre, we prefer to retain this association. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 141]
