DescriptionDescription: Martyr Captured as He Celebrates Mass. Laid down. Numbered at lower right in pen and brown ink: 223. (Sparre). Attributed to Montemezzano by W. R. Rearick. This artist seems to have been influenced by Veronese and he worked chiefly in Venice. Tietze lists six drawings by him and Rearick's attribution appears convincing in the first place when one compares a design for an altar-piece, representing St. Mary Magdalene carried towards heaven by angels, in the Kupferstichkabinett, Darmstadt. This work, signed and dated 26 May 1584, is of central importance for judging Montemezzano as a draughtsman. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. XXX]
