DescriptionDescription: St. Anthony. Numbered at lower right in pen and brown ink: 1275. Dismissed by Sirén as of little importance and with only a very distant connection with Veronese. Tietze suggested Maffei Verona, referring to his painting of the Blessed Christ and the Twelve Apostles, formerly used to screen Pala d'Oro in San Marco, now in Museo Marciana. Our figure has much in common with the standing figures of the apostles but an attribution would of course be hazardous without other drawings for comparison. Bernardino India has been suggested instead by John Gere, who refers to a newly discovered drawing in the British Museum - Madonna with the Child and St. Ann - that is a draft for the painting in Capella Pellegrini in San Bernardino, Verona, from 1579. Other sheets, in the Scholz collection, and at Christ Church serve to confirm the attribution. There is the same relation between a loose, calligraphic contour and a light wash of the form as well as certain characteristic features in the manner of drawing e.g. eyes and locks of hair.
