DescriptionDescription: Laid down. Inscribed on the old mount at lower right in pen and brown ink: "Cabinet de Crozat" (Tessin). Below this a long text in pen and brown ink: "Lattanzio Gambara Bresciano. S´adono alla maniera di Raffaelo la segui cosi uaga nel colorire ad oglio e fresco, come nella stragge degl´innocenti nel coro di SS faustino di Brescia, oue in una parte si trouua espreso il presento disegno." (Victoria). Verso: Biographical note on Tinoretto, 15 lines of handwriting in an engraved frame. The sheet pasted onto the same mount as the recto drawing. Provenance: Vicente Victoria (1650-1712) ; Crozat (Mariette 1741, no. 640) ; C.G. Tessin (List 1739-42, p. 48 r) ; J.G. Sack ; G. von Rosen ; C.U. Palm ; G. W. Lundberg Victoria states that there is a Massacre of the Innocents in the choir of SS Faustino et Giovita but this seems to be a mistake as the painting which is still there is Gambara´s "The Adoration of the Shepherds". Parma Cathedral, however, does have a painting of the "Massacre of the Innocents" for which there is a study in the Scholz collection. Our sheet is not connected directly with this composition, though it may be possible be related to some preparatory studies. Our drawing would seem to be a copy after Gambara.
