DescriptionDescription: Watermark: Crescents (close to Heawood 865: Venice c. 1600). Inscribed verso in pen and brown ink: Lunardo Corona. Verso: Studies of Angels. The style is similar to known works by Corona, primarily the Annunciation in the Louvre and The Raising of the Cross in Oxford. The kneeling saints in the present sheet are probably, 1. to r., St. Margaret, St. Clare, St. Magdalene and St. John the Divine. The canonized monk in the centre with handcuffs in his right hand is probably Hieronymus Aemilianus, who founded a spiritual order for men in 1632 at Somasco near Bergamo, having served as a Venetian general. His order administered several charitable institutions in Venice. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 35]
