DescriptionDescription: Venice, enthroned on the left with defeated Turks at her feet, is receiving a palm frond from an angel. Above are Christ, St. Mark and the lion and Justice; below, kneeling donors with their families. The motif suggests that the drawing was made fairly soon after the battle of Lepanto in 1572. Ballini painted a ceiling with the same iconography in Sala della Quarantia Civil Nuova in the Palazzo Ducale, Venice. It, too, is an oval composition but its long axis runs from top to bottom and no donors are portrayed. The drawing was, nevertheless, listed among Ballini's by Tietze since its style seems somewhat similar to that of a drawing in Ambrosiana, Milan, with an attribution to Ballini in Padre Resta's handwriting.
