DescriptionCatalogue raisonné: Description in Flemish paintings C. 1600-C. 1800 III, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, 2010, cat.no. 121:   Technical notes: The support consists of a single piece of densely and evenly woven plain-weave fabric. The tacking edges, which have been grounded and painted along all four sides have been preserved. The fact that the motif extends well beyond the tacking edges implies that the canvas has been trimmed. The canvas has been lined. A reddish-brown ground has been applied thickly and evenly to cover the texture of the canvas. The paint layer is thin and semi-opaque in application. There is light grey underpainting below the flesh tones. The face and body of the subject have been reserved and painted in separately. There are a few retouches to the face, hair and the lower section of the gown. The varnish layer has oxidised and acquired a yellowish tone. Provenance: Transferred in 1866 from Gripsholm Bibliography: Cat. Gripsholm I, Stockholm 1951, p. 13. In earlier times there was a great demand for copies of portraits depicting important rulers and their consorts from all over Europe and this applied at Gripsholm as well. This portrait of the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III in a painted black oval and decorated with the Order of the Golden Fleece is an eloquent example. The subject, Ferdinand III, is depicted in a painted oval and against a background of partly hanging draperies. Ferdinand III is wearing a black costume with a flat white collar and the Order of the Golden Fleece. This is a simply executed copy of an original work in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv. no. 66 8024). KS [End]
