The painting has been executed in simple manner on a red ground. It was painted in the 19th century and is by the same hand as no. 125. Provenance: Transferred in 1866 from Gripsholm. bibliography: Cat. Gripsholm I, Stockholm 1951, p. 15. This portrait of Johan Georg I, Elector of Saxony, in armour, can be dated to the 19th century. The subject is depicted facing three-quarters right wearing armour with a white collar on his shoulders and holding a marshal’s staff in one hand. The aged Johan Georg I is portrayed in his martial role against a neutral background without any visual setting in a painted oval. The portrait is iconographically and stylistically executed in the manner of Frans Luyckx. This simple, stylised portrait has a companion piece by the same hand depicting the subject’s consort, Magdalena Sibylla, Electress of Saxony (no. 33). KS [End]
