DescriptionRes. Katalogtext: Bortolozzi, Italian Architectural Drawings from the Cronstedt Collection, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, 2020 (cat. no. 55) Anon. mid- to late 16th-century draughtsman Pen and brown ink, light brown wash, construction lines pre-scored with stylus, compass, straightedge and freehand, 41.3/41.5 × 66 cm NM H CC 1363v PAPER: folded in the middle, lower right corner damaged. A narrow strip of paper glued along the upper edge suggests that the sheet had been bound in a volume from the verso, removed, and subsequently drawn. The drawing on the recto (Cat. no. 44) is drawn by two different, possibly earlier, hands WATERMARK: none visible PROVENANCE: Carl Johan Cronstedt and descendants; Eric Langenskiöld; gift to the Nationalmuseum of Stockholm 1941 BIBLIOGRAPHY: unpublished The drawings: (a) Plan of the Area Capitolina and porticus southwest of the Capitoline Hill, most probably based on a reconstruction by Francesco di Giorgio Martini and transmitted by drawing in the Codex Saluzziano; (b) possibly a Renaissance fantasy, a variation on the theme of the circular plan of the Mausoleum of S.Costanza in Rome; (c) reconstruction plan of a thermal complex, probably with no relationship to any ancient monument. In contrast with the other sheets with drawings of central planned buildings, here the draughtsman has used a stylus instead of black chalk for the preparatory drawing. OTHER DRAWINGS: (a) Turin, BR, Codex Saluzziano 148, fol. 82 r, copyist of Francesco di Giorgio Martini [end]
