The dimensions and the details generally agree with the final phase of the design, i.e., they conform to the wooden model and to the engravings by Antonio Salamanca. Christof Thoenes (Thoenes 1994, 643–644, Cat. no. 367) proposes that the drawing was made in Sangallo’s workshop, but not by Sangallo himself. A likely candidate is Antonio Labacco, who collaborated with Sangallo during the last phase of the model’s design (Benedetti 1994, 631–633). Thoenes also suggests that it was probably a preparatory drawing for a full engraving, though not for Salamanca’s (Fig. 1), which was on a different scale.
