E FRIEGIO (at lower right); numbers MEASUREMENTS: none; no scale PROVENANCE: Carl Johan Cronstedt and descendants; Eric Langenskiöld; gift to the Nationalmuseum of Stockholm 1941 BIBLIOGRAPHY: unpublished The drawing appears to be a copy after a series of studies of the five orders by Giovanni Battista Montano (Milan c. 1534–Rome 1621). Montano proportioned the orders using a modular system and his drawings provided a simple method for the design of the orders as columns or pilasters, with or without pedestal, as arcades or as trabeated bays. Large numbers of independent sets of drawings and multiple copies of single drawings after Montano have survived in public and private collections (see Fairbairn 1998, II, 541–554). Linda Fairbairn suggests that the drawings had been available for sale during Montano’s lifetime either as sets of drawings with frontispieces or as single sheets.
