DescriptionDescription: Boxes given by royal personages to court staff and diplomats were often a form of monetary gift in disguise. This box, however, seems to have been a gift between friends, according to the inscription. It reads: “LVRS Turned This Box For His Good Friend Gyllen-Stolpe”. The recipient, Count Nils Filip Gyldenstolpe (1734–1810), was a marshal of the court and lord chamberlain from 1764 for Lovisa Ulrika, who thus made the box herself. Turning ivory was a popular pastime in the 18th century, even among royalty. The box belonged to the Swedish Royal Armoury collection, which was divided in 1932 between the Royal Household, the Royal Armoury, the Nationalmuseum, the National Historical Museums and Nordiska museet
