DescriptionDescription: Julien Le Roy (1686–1759), who signed the movement of this carriage clock, was one of the finest clockmakers in Paris in the 18th century. His success was based on several technological innovations that earned him an appointment as Louis XV’s royal clockmaker in 1739. This clock was made to be hung from the roof of a travel carriage, to show the owner the correct hour, minute, day and month. It also has a repeater mechanism with chimes, so the passengers could hear what time it was even in the dark. The extravagant chased-silver casing decorated with mythological figures had a protective leather-clad outer travel case. The clock belonged to Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt (1757–1814). It must have been in used condition when it was acquired by or given to him, because Le Roy stopped making clocks in 1759. Although it was not in the latest fashion, Armfeldt would have been charmed by this Parisian luxury item from a famous clockmaker.
