DescriptionDescription: In the late 1620s, Jan Lievens and Rembrandt collaborated in Leiden. They were the same age, and works from their youth are often hard to distinguish. This painting of the apostle Paul shows an affinity with Rembrandt’s work, in its subject and in its vigorous light and shadow and realistic rendering of the furrowed face and coarse hand. Paul is portrayed as an ageing scholar who, deep in thought and illuminated by divine light, writes his epistles.
