DescriptionDescription: For the artists in Rome, the cafes became meeting points. Some of the establishments still exist. Södermark's portrait shows an employee in a cafe. The painting has a more intimate feeling to it than many of his others. The woman, who seems to be caught in the middle of her work, gives us a glimpse of Rome in her time, and the painting is less constrained than most folklore paintings from Rome. Description from Art Bulletin of Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, vol 16, 2009: Olof Södermark was one of many Swedish officers during the first half of the 19th century who devoted themselves to artistic pursuits. In the mid-1820s he spent some time in Rome, where he painted this portrait of a woman at a café. The portrait is interesting in its total lack of the idealisation that otherwise characterised portraiture at that time. [slut]
