DescriptionDescription: Maria Ricci was married to the artist Carl Gustaf Plagemann and served as the model for sensual Italian women in some of his paintings. Emma Ekwall’s portrait, by contrast, shows her as a respectable middle-class woman in a theatre box. Ekwall was only 21 when she painted it and had yet to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. Despite her youth, her composition demonstrates a refined use of colour, dominated by white, red and black, with a few accents of gold.

Additional texteDescription: In the portrait, Maria Plagemann, née Ricci, is sitting in a box at the theatre – a space in public life which a woman from the middle classes could also access. Maria Ricci met Swedish artist Carl Gustaf Plagemann during his long stay in Italy. Her family did not appreciate the idea of a protestant husband from the remote north, so the couple were practically forced to elope in order to marry. The painting was created in Sweden by Emma Ekwall.
