DescriptionDescription: Inscribed at bottom, on the mount: Timotée Viti. Cabinet de Crozat, at lower right numbered 266 (Sparre), also part of an inscription in red "Gio: Tri (...)" The drawing represents en early project for the decoration of the Chigi chapel in S. Maria del Pace. In the fresco, probably executed 1513-14, Raphael introduced more figures and greater movement. Raphael must have planned the decorations while still working in the Stanza della Segnatura. As first noted by Hirst, there is a small sketch for the present composition on the back of a sheet for the present composition on the back of a sheet in Oxford [O. Joannides, The Drawings of Raphael, Oxford 1983, under no. 228v (copy)] with studies for The School of Athens; this may have been projected in 1509, although it has recently been suggested that it was the last fresco to be painted there, in 1511 [C. Gould, 'The chronology of Raphael's Stanze, a Revision', Gazette des Beaux-Arts, 6.e pér., CXVII (1991), pp. 171-181]. A rapid sketch for two fo the prophets is on another sheet in Oxford [O. Joannides, op.cit., no. 333v] with figures studies for The Expulsion of Heliodorus in the Stanza d'Eliodoro, probably early 1512. This suggests a date around 1511-12. As far as can be judged from the ruined state of the drawing, the style is close to the few modelli preserved for the Stanza della Segnatura frescoes [O. Joannides, op.cit., noc 197, 254]. Unlike these, there are no pentimenti, and it is therefore most likely a copy of the modella, or as Oberhuber has suggested, a clean drawing by Penni, based on a sketch by Raphael. The drawing has an old attribution to Timoteo Viti, who according to Vasari painted the prophets flanking the window. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 530]
