Additional texteExhibition text: Le Barbier was born in Rouen and at first studied at the art school which his master Jean-Baptiste Descampes (1714–1791) had founded there. After that, he was mostly active in Paris. The years 1767–1768 Le Barbier was in Rome and probably his studies there inspired this work, newly acquired to the museum. To create the right atmosphere in depictions of scenes from Antiquity, capturing the essence of a Roman setting could be of central importance.
